Newsletter
We’re delighted to connect with you through this edition of the Azusa Pacific University Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (APU GWEP) newsletter, where innovation meets compassion in age-friendly care. We’ve just celebrated the triumphant close of our intensive 12-week interprofessional clinical rotation, immersing our dedicated geriatric scholars in hands-on experiences across underserved Southern California communities—from bustling urban clinics in Los Angeles to vital rural outposts in Riverside County. This program not only honed their skills in holistic geriatric assessment and family-centered care but also sparked real-world impact, with participants leading initiatives that improved patient outcomes and bridged care gaps for our region’s rapidly aging population.
As we turn the page to 2025, our momentum is stronger than ever. We’re launching a fresh clinical rotation in January, designed to empower the next cohort of interprofessional leaders in geriatrics, and we’re now accepting applications right on our website—simply visit apu.agefriendly.care and look for the easy-to-spot link to apply. This year, we’re channeling our energy into expanding our preceptor pool, equipping seasoned clinicians with advanced training to mentor the next generation, while pioneering transformative approaches to nursing home care. At the heart of our work is cutting-edge AI integration: we’re harnessing these tools to supercharge student education through personalized simulations, streamline data collection for seamless geriatric team collaboration, and deliver predictive insights that prevent common challenges like pressure ulcers and falls—ultimately enhancing resident safety, reducing costs, and elevating quality of life.
Drawing from HRSA GWEP’s national framework and California’s Master Plan for Aging, our efforts are tailored to Southern California’s unique needs, fostering equitable, innovative care that honors the dignity of every older adult. Seminar Details: Pelvic Health Physical Therapy for the Aging Population, is a presentation that will discuss pelvic floor dysfunction and physical therapy for the geriatric population. As the population ages, pelvic health concerns such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain can become increasingly prevalent, impacting independence and quality of life. This session will explore the importance of recognizing and addressing pelvic floor dysfunctions in older adults, highlighting the specialized role and scope of pelvic physical therapy in their management. We will review current assessment and treatment strategies tailored to the aging population, and examine real-life case examples to illustrate clinical reasoning and outcomes. By the end of this presentation, participants will gain practical insights into how pelvic health physical therapy can enhance function, dignity, and overall well-being in older adults.
My Perspective
Written by Jewels Chatman, MSW
My passion for serving older adults began with my grandparents. They built their lives together after meeting in the eighth grade, later moving from Oklahoma to California to raise their family and pursue opportunity. My grandmother worked in a school, and my grandfather was an electrical lineman, both proud of their work, their family, and their independence . . .
