The Azusa Pacific University (APU) Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) faculty and collaborators played a prominent role at the Gerontological Society of America’s (GSA) 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting, “Innovative Horizons in Gerontology,” in Boston this November. Our team presented three distinct posters showcasing the excellence of APU’s research and commitment to interprofessional, Age-Friendly care. APU faculty authors who contributed to these achievements included David V. Picella, PhD, NP, CPG, along with Diana Lynn Woods, PhD, APRN, FGSA, FAAN, Sanggon Nam, PhD, Lowell Renold, PhD, Diane Chau, MD, Joy Smith, RN, PhD, and Susie Baker, LCSW. Our work demonstrated critical findings, such as: the use of immersive simulation training to boost NP student empathy for complex older adults and reduce the perceived cost burden of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM); the successful design and implementation of an interprofessional course for underserved populations using the Age-Friendly 4Ms framework; and a powerful RPM case study showing how the technology led to zero hospitalizations ($120K savings) over eight months for a patient who previously had 3–4 ER visits per month.

APU’s participation took place in the context of a transformative conference that highlighted the most critical and cutting-edge research in the field of aging. The GSA 2025 meeting, bringing together thousands of global professionals, spotlighted scientific findings and discussions that will power our learning and application into the future, including breakthroughs in AgeTech (such as AI applications in care), critical policy debates around Medicare Advantage, urgent research into addressing financial exploitation of older adults, and the persistent challenge of closing socio-economic disparities in health outcomes. We are proud to have contributed our findings to this national conversation. Furthermore, our achievements in interprofessional education were recognized at a dinner presentation hosted by the California Geriatric Society at Eataly restaurant in Boston on December 12th, delivered by Susie Baker, LCSW. Energized by the conference’s innovative spirit, we are excited to announce forthcoming collaborations with scholars from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the University of Texas at El Paso, extending APU’s influence in geriatric care and education nationwide.
